What are Fractures and Trauma care?
A fracture and Trauma care management is a medical condition involving a broken bone. It can refer to either a complete or partial break in the continuity of the bone, or it may be a crack in the bone without any actual break in its structure.
Fractures are common injuries. They are caused by a sudden impact on the bone or excessive force exerted on it. Fractures lead to discontinuity in the mass of the bone. This leads to weakening of its structure and eventually, it can get broken easily. The most commonly fractured bones are ribs, pelvic bones, clavicle, skull, fingers and toe bones.
Fractures can occur from falls and trauma. Orthopedic trauma is typically a result of some external force that damages the musculoskeletal system including bones, cartilage, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.
Fractures are also a common problem among older people who have suffered from long term thinning of their bones, a condition known as osteoporosis. Athletes who train too hard and don't recover enough between training sessions can cause stress fractures in the bone.
Some of the most common causes are:
- Falls
- Car accidents
- Sports injuries
What are the symptoms of a bone fracture?
Bone fractures are an abnormal break that happen to a bone. Symptoms include: Pain, swelling, tenderness, inability to move part of the body normally, bruising or discoloration, and deformity.
What are the different types of bone fractures?
A fracture is the medical term for a broken bone. There are several types of fractures, and all of them vary in classification. Your physician will classify your fracture based on how it breaks, the cause of the fracture, and where in your body it occurred. The main factors that determine the type of a fracture are its: Pattern, Cause and Body Part.
What tests are done to diagnose Fractures?
Fractures are one of the more common injuries treated in emergency departments. X-rays, CT scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are commonly used to diagnose and examine fractures.
What are the best treatments for fractures?
Treatments for fractures, including pelvic fractures, upper and lower extremity fractures, and post-traumatic conditions, depend on the type of fracture and injury.
Nonsurgical treatment options include a cast or splint to immobilize the injured area with casts, splints, braces and traction
Medications such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs given
Physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Surgical treatment option, sometimes a broken bone requires more than just a cast. When bones need to be put back together, metal plates and screws are used to fixate (keep together) the fragments of broken bone. If your bone breaks, you will need an operation. Surgery is used to fixate (keep the parts together) broken bones and support them whilst they heal.
External fixation is a device used to provide support to the fractured or severed portion of the body. The option is used in open and closed fractures, burns, soft tissue injuries, fractures having bony deficit, limb-lengthening procedures and post-operative treatment of fractures caused by severe fractures and mechanical problems.
How long does it take a Fracture to heal?
During fracture healing, body protects the injured area with a blood clot and fibrous connective tissue. Bone cells grow on either side of the fracture line. Cells then begin forming towards each other closing the fracture. A Physician can help reduce the time it takes for your fracture or break to heal so you can get back to living your life.
Bone fracture healing time varies depending on the extent of damage with necessary treatment. It could take several weeks to several months. You should limit your activities even after the removal of cast or brace so that the bone becomes solid enough to bear the stress while it heals.
Rehabilitation program involves exercises and gradual increase in activity levels until the process of healing is complete.
