Different Types of Surgery for Knee Pain

Understanding Knee Joint

The knee is made up of 4 structures: bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons.

Bones- Your knee is formed by three bones: femur, tibia and kneecap. The kneecap (patella) sits in front of the joint to provide some protection.

Articular cartilage is a smooth substance that covers the bone surfaces in your knee. It is important for gliding and bending movements. It covers the ends of your femur, tibia, and patella. Articular cartilage protects the ends of the bones in your knee, allowing for smooth movement when you bend and straighten your leg.

Meniscus- Two wedge-shaped pieces of fibrocartilage located between the femur and tibia. Made up of tough, rubbery tissue, they function as shock absorbers, help stabilize the joint, and assist in moving the knee.

Ligaments- Is a band of tough, fibrous connective tissue that connects two bones or cartilages. In our body, ligaments act like strong ropes to hold the bones together and keep our knees stable.

Some diseases, disorders, or even accidents can cause damage to the cartilage or the total knee joint. As a result of damage to the knee joint, the major consequences are usually severe pain and stiffness and may lead to multiple problems, such as injured ligaments, loose bone fragments, joint surface damage, and other medical conditions, including arthritis, gout, and infection.

If you've been diagnosed with a knee condition and need treatment, there is likely to be a number of surgical procedures that may be required. Understanding these before surgery will help alleviate stress, confusion and it could even reduce costs.
